You could attach the oil cooler directly to the front of the fiberglass cowling with long-ish oil lines connecting the cooler to the engine. Of course, this means that you would have to unfasten the cooler from the cowling if you want to remove the cowling. On the RV-12 this is easily accomplished by removing two AN-3 bolts at the top of the cooler -- the bottom of the cooler is indexed/attached to the cowling via two positioning slots. Make sure that you provide sufficient space (@ couple of inches?) between the cooler and the super-hot muffler assembly.

    Thx D,

I like it not being attached to the gearbox, lot of shaking during startup and shut down.

Not sure mine would be that easy to mount to the the cowl. It indented and not flat.

I really like the bracket vans have though.

Both sides are attached the same way and the bracket is one piece. I have zero problems with this. The harder it is to remove your cowling, the less it will get removed. I haven't had to even retighten it. I did remove the gearbox for the 600 hour inspection. Just put it back together the same way.

I have the cooler mounted out front, right below the oil pump.
    It is tight...

I have to run the outlet pipe from the cooler up over the copilot cylinders and back under, then a 90 into the oil pump.

Any issue with the oil hose back up?
    Thx

I would try to keep it short, put a spring inside the hose (Like Roger Lee) has suggested in the past or use a couple of 90 deg fittings to make the bend.
