Hi Rotax experts,

I am purchasing a used Rotax 914UL engine from a friend to replace the engine that failed in my Kitfox last year.

A friend has an old 914UL engine that has sat in a box for a few years and was running when taken out of service for a newer engine. The engine was replaced because of some rough running episodes and the age. He has given me the engine to check out and has asked me to pay him what I think it is worth.

The engine serial no is: 9576133

The engine was involved in a prop strike at about 300 hours and was rebuilt and had the crankshaft changed after that incident. It has now got 1300 hours on it and has been maintained by a local AMO. All the rest of the engine is the same.

I intend to use only the block from the old engine, and replace everything else with parts from my engine that failed and had only done 85 hours, so they are nearly new.

The question I want to ask is, what do you think the engine or the engine block from that old engine is worth, so I can pay him a fair price for it?

Thanks in advance for replies

This makes no sense to me.

Your friend has a 914Ul engine that had a prop strike 1000 hours ago and was rebuilt but was then replaced because it was running rough and not repaired and has been sitting for a few years.

You have an engine that "Failed" at 85 hours and are planning on taking your bad parts and installing them in the block of his 1300 hour engine.

Is this a case of two negatives making a positive?
    - - -
    But that wasn't the question.

    A new crankcase is $3800.
The one you are buying is 65% of the way to TBO. That makes it worth 1300-1500 if you want to be generous.

A new 914 engine is $30,000, If his old engine was in pristine working order it would be worth ≈$10.000.
Given its history, $5000 would be generous.
You could cannibalize the crankcase and part out the remaining pieces and might break even if you were willing to go through all the work that would entail.
If all you are after is the crankcase, then something well less than the $3800 new crankcase price is what the engine would be worth to you.

It would make more sense to find out why his engine was running rough and fix it.
Then sell it for $10,000 and buy a new crankcase for your "Failed" engine and pocket the change.
Or just use his engine after the repair and buy a new crankcase for your engine and then sell it and pocket the change.
Or just buy a new crankcase and be done with it.

If your engine was "Trashed", every part in it is now suspect and will require a close inspection before transferring it to the other crankcase.

All this assumes that you are capable of doing the rebuild yourself and there will be no third party labor costs.
If someone else is going to be doing the work. $$$
Then none of this makes sense.
