Not a good idea, as taught in the Rotax maintenance class at Lockwood Aviation the energy built up needs to be disabled through the spark plugs. Damaged to your $900 dollar ignition modules can result if engine is cranked with spark plug leads removed.

If that is the case, why does the Rotax Service Bulletin on Purging the Lubrication System include as part of the procedure:

Step 4: Remove all of the spark plug connectors from the spark plugs

    ...

Step 7: Turn the engine by hand in the direction of normal rotation

When turning by hand you are not usually spinning the engine fast enough to generate a spark. I was told in the class the 912 needs at least 600 rpm to make spark. I don't know the reasoning for step 4, maybe it is in case you do not pull a plug in each cylinder and you spin the propellor fast enough to make spark with ignition accidentally left on, you and or your hand could be struck by prop if engine fires.

Here is a you tube video of hand propping a 912.

    OK... So here's an update.

Aircraft has been sitting for a little while now, and new leakdowns tested on a stone cold engine.  Results were 77/80 78/80 78/80 78/80

    Leakdowns don't lie.

So I am happy to continue on as normal.  The leakdowns, colour of the oil (still looks new), no oil use and colour of the plugs confirms that the motor is fine.
