I have an early model 912UL mounted on a RANS S-12. It is running perfectly.

My issue is with the noise level in the cockpit. It is extremely loud. The system features a collector box for the four headers which then directs the exhaust into the prop. For starters, I would like to see if there is an alternative collector I can install that would attenuate better. I also suspect that because the collector is directing the exhaust directly into the prop it is reflecting the noise back toward the cockpit. That being the case, I would like to see if a different collector would route the exhaust to the sides or up.

I have attached a picture of the exhaust.

Any thoughts on this matter would be appreciated.

Check out this company CKT they have a very good reputation and product line. It is used on my Remos GX and people have commented on how quiet it is.

Thanks, Garrett, for your quick reply. At this point I'm trying not to buy a whole new exhaust system.

I looked at CKT and some other companies but what I want to do first is identify the system I have on the plane. If that company is still in business I want to see if they have a different collector for me to try out.

In Looking at the Photo in your opening post, it appears that "Collector" is the proper term.

It does not look like what you have is a Muffler system of any sort.   Maybe a mini Glass-Pack at best.

It appears to be not much over 2" in diameter and maybe 8" long.  ???

If the exhaust was actually muffled, pointing it at the prop would not be of much significance.

All pusher configurations have the exhaust pointed towards the prop.

Pusher aircraft tend to have quieter cockpits.

Take a look into those exhaust tips to see if there is any sort of baffling in place.

If you can see the ends of the 4 exhaust pipes, what you have is an open header.

If you are looking for quiet, you will need to invest in an actual muffler system.

The Rans Aircraft Parts Manual shows that the aircraft was originally equipped with an actual muffler mounted sideways.
