I am new to the Rotax world. I have about 40 hours on a 912S big bore. I normally preheat the tank to about 70F . I pull the prop through about 15 turns . Battery normally reads 12.2 volts . I use the cold start procedure and engage using one mag. The last few times I’ve been getting a “clunk “ when I engage and immediately release. This will happen about 3 or 4 try’s then eventually does turn over. Is this normal ? Any advice ?

Why do you use only one "mag" for a cold start?

Your battery should be at 12.6+ volts.  It's a little weak.

Engage and HOLD the starter for 3 seconds.  If it doesn't pull through in that time you may need a battery maintainer or a new battery.

In a 912is, BOTH Lanes are supposed to be ON and Lamps cleared.

Do you wait for the Fuel Pressure to stabilize?

Did you remember that this engine wants to start with the Throttle Half-Open or more???

Keep your hand on the throttle and pull it back to idle as soon as it catches or it will get exciting in a hurry!

    Tyler Asked:

Why do you (Does He) use only one "mag" for a cold start?

A One Mag start would be proper for a 912S with a single "Soft Start" Module.

    Which begs the question...

    Brian,

    Are we talking about a 912S or a 912is ??

This post is in the 912is section!

Thank you Bill.  Normally I have been 8-10 seconds on fuel pump and throttle closed. I did purchase a new battery which I will install today. the current one  has been running 12.2 even after charging.  The protocol I was given when I purchased the plane was a one mag start.  Your response is much appreciated . Thank you! Brian Moore
