My 914 turbo is passing oil to the induction system as evidenced by oil blowing out of a telltale hole on the inlet of the intercooler.  I suspected the check valve on the turbo oil inlet was leaking during shutdown periods so I replaced it.  Also checked the output of the turbo oil scavenge pump by breaking the connection at the oil tank which showed good flow during engine run. Am I missing something?

Were you getting a big cloud of smoke on startup or just mysteriously losing Oil???

Have you inspected the Turbo Oil Sump for Debris?

Have you checked the Inlet Bajo Bolt at the input of the Turbo Oil Scavage Pump for Debris?

I didn't notice any smoke but then I started it from sitting in the cockpit and the engine is behind the cockpit.  I'll try starting from outside the cockpit.

Loss of oil is only noticed from the telltale hole on the lower header of the intercooler. The oil is coming out and the airflow in the cowling is spreading it around.  I pulled the turbo oil inlet check valve and found a little bit of debris and also replaced the banjo and ball.  Haven't pulled the turbo sump yet, it seemed that the flow from the scavenge pump was sufficient to warrant a clear sump.  I don't think the oil is continuously blowing from the telltale as I don't seem to be losing an excessive amount of oil.  Maybe it's happening just during start up.

    Thanks,

    Tim

I am ready to replace the oil check valve spring and ball on my 914 turbo as I get blue smoke and oil leaking from exhaust/muffler connections on every startup. Question: Did a lot of oil pour out when you opened the banjo bolt and did you have to purge the system of air before starting it back up? Thanks!

The turbo scavaging pump draws the return oil from the Turbo Sump and pumps it back to the Oil tank.

This pump has way more capacity than it ever uses and so more than 50% of what it pumps is Air!

Getting Air in this line is a non-issue.

The Air that it pumps is separated from the Oil in the Oil tank by the baffle screen.  Its what its there for.

This is the same process that separates the Oil and Combustion Gasses that are returned from the crankcase to the Oil Tank.

If you do not Open (Take the Cover Off of)  the Oil Pumps themselves, There is no need or reason to purge the system.
