Roger,
Is it beter to lift the engine be removing the attachments to the engine mount or by removing the mount from attachment points to airframe?

This answer depends on how your engine is mounted. If it sits on top of a flat mount and bolted down then loosen the bolts and lift it up. These bolts are vertical. If they are mounted to the rear towards the firewall and at each corner of the engine then you may need to hold the engine up and unbolt it from the firewall to move it out far enough to get the mount bolts out. These bolts are horizontal.
