Re: In flight adjustable Ivoprop for 912UL?
by RUSSELL A DUFFY » 3 years ago
I've built and flown a number of aircraft with geared engines, from 2-strokes to Mazda rotary aircraft, so I understand how this works. Fixed pitch is always a compromise, but at least when it's ground adjustable, you get to chose whether you want more climb, or more cruise.
My primary question is about in-flight adjustable props to avoid the compromise. It would have to be a maximum of 60" diameter, which is almost certainly going to force it to also be 3-blade. Ivoprop would likely be the cheapest, and easiest to obtain, which is why it's in the subject. I'd love to have comments about the Ivo IFA prop from actual users if possible. If there is another that fits my requirements, I'll certainly look into it.
Thanks,
Rusty

If you are "fair dinkum" on the CS/IFA prop be prepared to pay big dollars. Somewher in the range $10-15 K AU
Airmaster (one of the best around for Rotax powered aircraft) https://www.propellor.com/ will set you back somewhere in the vicinity of $12,000 AU ($8540 US).
Hellices E-Prop https://www.e-props.fr/ is being promoted heavily as the latest & greatest.
MT- Propeller https://www.mt-propeller.com/en/entw/pro_elec.htm (bit above the others cost, comes in both hydraulic & electric)
Rospeller http://www.rospeller-aero.de/the-propellers-in-english.html (similar to the Fiti)

Thanks for the links. I imagine most of those are expensive enough to make me stick with the Warp Drive.
Cheers,

I am happy with my Whirlwind prop- ground adjustable only on mine but you might give them a call.

I looked at the Whirlwind props previously, and they list 68-70 inch, which wouldn't work. That seems to be a common problem with all the really nice props. To get something shorter, you have to work your way down to the "cut it off as short as you want" types :-)
Ivoprop told me they could do a 60", but it would have to be in the medium blade, even though 80 HP is within the range of the standard blade. That took the price just over $3k for the in-flight adjustable, and that's more than I'd want to spend right now. If I find a good used Ivoprop around, I might try it as a ground adjustable, and if it seems promising, I could go to inflight adj later.
Thanks,
Rusty
