If you use standard coolant then it does have a 2-3 year life span. In the old days silicate in the coolant could be an issue. So they did away from silicate in most coolants. If you use the DexCool EXTENDED LIFE 50/50 coolant (orange bottle cap and orange fluid color) you can go from one 5 year rubber change to the next.

Roger - I am sure you are factually correct however for the obsessive personality (me) 5 years is far too long.

My, near new, Ford claims to have a 10 year coolant lifespan - I have already changed the coolant at 2 years.

Luckily I can use the same coolant in my Ford (and other family vehicles) as the Rotax, so can sort of kid myself I am making a saving.

For the same, non mechanical reason, I change my, ULP fueled, Rotax oil (not filter) at 50 hrs - makes me feel good!

    Hi Sean,

Everyone seems to do oil and coolant a little different. No big deal. I'd rather change things a little early vs TOO late and there are those that do that too.

Prestone says their Dex-Cool 50/50 is good for 5 years / 150K miles.

All the folks I know all use it and change it at the 5 year rubber change. Like you said it only takes about 3/4 gal. depending on the aircraft's cooling system setup. Cost here for a gallon is right at $15.

Most of us here use 50 hr. oil changes too.

I look at the oil as the blood in your body and the electrical system as our nervous system. Disease either one and your body or engine my cease to exist earlier than you planned.

I hope the coolant isn't just runny sinuses. LOL

    Hi Dennis,

No hornets nest. We all get along and share ideas and differences at times from continent to continent. It's all about sharing and learning. I have never been upset with anyone's post. I've always look at it that if people like your post good and if they don't then no big deal.

There are some really good techs and informed people hear and it's nice to chat and see the world through others eyes and minds.
