Any comments on where to route oil lines, for best flow, best cooling, least interference?

My old line coming out of oil tank went underneath all other hoses and appliances with no fire sleeve. I don’t like that it sits on top of hot crankcase. I’m adding fire sleeve but also thinking of routing up over top, but near the expansion tank. But, then, how hot is that expansion tank? And I probably want to keep away from fuel lines (2 photos).

I suspect that every airframe is different depending on location of the cooler.

My oil lines go over the muffler as do most all of the nearly 800 RV-12 sold. I just finished the 5 year rubber replacement and routing went well.

Nice looking! My radiator is up high (Remos), so I gotta go over the top. But, I’d guess that muffler is hotter than my crankcase, so maybe I don’t have to be so concerned with heat.

    Hi Wallace,

How/where is your Oil Cooler secured?

Why does the Cooler to Oil Pump line not go direct/shortest rout?

If it were my aircraft, I would be having some form of additional heat protection (shielding/wrap), for the oil lines, just where they are closest to the muffler/silencer.

    Hi Robert,

The oil in the line is not so much cooler than the crankcase, so the orange fire sleeve is probably sufficient insulation.

I would be more concerned with the potential for the hot oil line to add unnecessary heat to your ignition modules & fuel lines

Hi Sean, my oil cooler attaches to the bottom cowl. In my picture above it was just hanging loose, until I re-install the cowling. All my lines are all protected by fireproof flexible hose covering. Van's has nearly 800 of these RV-12's this way and the oil lines are working good.
