As far as I know only the Stock EMU has the start relay function.
Stienair installed a clever rotary switch on the One-Week-Wonder (for the start function only) it had a momentary position for the start power (with a positive detent so you can feel it) and then a starter position.

Thank you Rob! What I need is a Four position diesel ignition switch with the pre heat function, Hella part no. 40-4010. The preheat detent is spring loaded and further turning the key starts the engine. It also has an anti restart function that protects the starter motor.

I've also finally understood what Rotax means by a "Battery back up" switch. I was confused because I couldn't find a "Backup battery" in the circuit diagrams. However I now understand that the switch is there to provide battery power to the ECU in the event of a double generator failure.

Maybe if Rotax called it an "Alternate (or emergency) ECU power" switch?

Flight Design uses a rotary switch and they have the back up battery switch too.

    Hi Geoffrey,
first of all I apologize if my English is not correct, but I'll try to explain.
I am not an owner of a Rotax 912is but I'm considering mounting it on a new airplane that I should buy. Also I find that starting the 912is with two hands is not a good thing and... too many switches !
So I'm studying the wiring diagrams and also I was looking for a system with an ignition key. The only solution is a rotary switch with 4 positions: off, master, pre-heating and starter, moreover as you wrote! One problem could be the number of relays: we need for three. Master, power start and starter.
The only thing you have to check very well if is when you switch the contact from preheat to starter, the contact preheat remains "on": otherwise you will lose the function of "power start" during starter procedure.
Not all the key rotary switch with the function of preheating do it.
I could not find the specifications of Hella 40-4010 and I would ask you if you can post me the link.
I found only one with this feature: the COBO 14.306.000, but made in Italy and here you can find the wiring diagram: http://www.cobospa.it/catalogo/zz_it/14-23-30/14/11/14306000.htm
    Sincerely
