Hi

I have consistently been doing oil changes at 50 hrs in my 912UL engine with no problems, using Sport Plus 4 oil.

After recently running through to the Rotax 100 hr oil change interval, since I was away on an extended flying trip, my FE content has shot up.

Previous FE was running at FE94 at 1428.9 hrs but after 97.9 hrs and 1580.3 total hrs it shot up to FE301. A further 5.3 hrs another oil analysis FE88 then another oil analysis at 19.5 hrs FE146 and total hrs 1606.1 hrs at this stage.

Inspection of the oil filter with no abnormal particles visible and Mag plug not showing anything unusual. What are the limits for these FE particles?

The FE (iron) content can go up and down. This can be normal. Just keep an eye on it and make sure you do timely oil changes, good tank flushes and inspect the magnetic plug and oil filter each oil change. I do a lot of oil sampling on all my clients over a certain number of logged hours. I get copies of all the analysis.

It can also be affected by how you collect your sample. You shouldn't collect it at the begining of the drain nor at the end. Catch the sample in the middle of the oil drain. At the very begining of the drain you will usually see higher concentrations of heavy contaminants that sink to the bottom of the tank.

This is another reason not to use Quick Drain valves. You get a very poor tank flush vs just removing the tank plug. The Quick Drain valve will allow some of those heavy contaminates to stay in the tank.
