Hi,
I have a rotax 912UL installed in my plane. The engine starts and runs fine but will not shut down. I have traced the trouble to the bottom ignition module.I have disconnected the bottom module ground wire from the aircraft wireing and ran a wire directly from the module ground wire to a bolt on the engine and it still keeps running. I removed the spark plug wires from the plugs serviced by this module and the engine stars, runs and shuts down on just the top module With the engin off and both modules disconnected from the aircraft wireing, I ran a continuity check og both module's grounding wires. The top module showed no continuity between the module grounding wire and the engine. The bottom module showed no resistance at all from the module grounding wire to the engine. I even rotated the engine by had to preclude that these readings might be in only one position of the engine. I believe that the bottom module is bad but I'm hoping that someone wiser then I will point to a less expensive fix.

    Hi Robert

The guys up in Canada have an ignition tester that can test your suspect iginition module but it sounds like the p-lead has failed internally if you can't see a loose pin connector or broken wire externally? They also have good servicable used modules that can save you some money if you need to replace it. Over boarder shipping is no problem, there number is 250-803-4295. :)

I have a similar problem that appeared yesterday (15 Oct) with my 914. When I turned the key to off to shutdown the engine, it kept on going. I shutdown by swithing off the fuel pump.
Where's the best place to start looking with this problem, the ignition switch?

The switch is the first place to try. I disconnected the wire from the module, at the module and using an ohm meter, and checked the continiuity from the wire end to ground, with the switch in its various positions.

Don't run the engine with plug wires off.
You most likely have a bad ground between the 6 pin connector at the module and the ignition switch. This is where I would start my look and check. This is usually the culprit and not the module. The modules aren't 100% bullet proof, but do have a very good history of service and longevity.

A word of caution. Untill this problem is resolved, you have a hot prop. This means that there is a possibility that if someone moves the prop the engine might start.Depending on fuel available it might only be for a few blades or it could keep running. I have my plane parked on the ramp and as I am not going to fly untill I resolve this problem I have disconnected my spark plug wires at the spark plugs. I am not sure how easy the rotax would start but after many years of hand propping my var ezy with a continental engine I know how easy it is to start an engine by turning the prop.
