How did I get "Karma -1" in this forum

I get the general idea, I think, of what the Karma rating next to a member's name on posts might mean.
Just curious, what a "Karma -1" could mean?
As far as I know I haven't flamed anyone, posted off topic, or anything that would obviously explain that. Even have posted a few replies that I hope were helpful to others.
Anyone have any idea?
For that matter how does one get postive Karma on this formum? :S
