Hi everyone. I'm a new member of the forum. I am searching for a Quicksilver Sport 2S with a Rotax 582. So I am anticipating to be a Rotax owner...

But I do not have prior mechanical experience and so I need to learn a lot.

This question is about gearboxes. I know that there are several different ones available. Do you have to have one installed? If they all reduce the propeller RPM, then is the only difference the reading on the tach?

Do I need to stay away from any particular gearbox?

Is there some general information that I can read to help understand how the gearbox works?

Thanks, and I expect to ask more questions! Please be patient :)

    Mike,

All of the gearboxes are good, dependable units. The B box is the most commonly used box. There are thousands of them out there and they do a great job. The C box is a stronger unit capable of swinging a heavier prop. It offers better shaft support with more bearings and a rubber internal torsional shock absorber rather than the steel dogs in the B box. The E box is the same as the C box except it has a built in starter. The E box starter is great if you don't have room behind the engine for a standard starter or a sidewinder electric starter. You have to use a gearbox to reduce the RPMs of the two cycle engine. Props are designed to operate most efficiently at speeds half that of the 582. If you buy the gearbox separately, it is a simple eight bolt installation with no alignment necessary. Don't worry about the tach; it reads engine RPM, not prop RPM.

If you want to see the internal workings of the boxes, go to the top of the page and click on SUPPORT and then click on MANUALS. Lots of information there.

    Bill.
