I bought my 2007 CTLS, wiht 400 hrs., and had it shipped to Hawaii in July. I have about 25 hours on it now, flying around and enjoying the spectacular views here.

But.....I have noticed that "occasionally" during my pre-flight the L and R tanks can physically measure 6-7 gallons differently....strange, as they are interconnected, and I though constantly leveling or balancing out.....hmmmm; what is going on ......

Recently, when I checked them on my flight from Maui back to Kona the L tank was 7 gallons, while the R tank was 12 gallons. If I was flying on only the L tank, then I would not make it back to Kona, so I stopped in Hana, physically checked them ( just to be "safe" ) and they were both exactly equal.....what's up?

Anyone's rationale / understanding / explanation for this would really be appreciated, as flying almost exclusively over water one wants a little confidence in what is happening :O)

    Hi Scott,

First I would recommend signing up on the www.ctflier.com forum. This has been discussed for 7 years and there is a ton of info and good techs there for your particular aircraft. (other LSA's as well) I to have a CT and for almost 7 years with over 1000 hrs. There is another brand new CTLSi on the main island.

The unequal tank drain is due to the flat tank design and flying just slightly out of trim. Your ball on the panel may be centered, but the panel or instrument may be just a tad off. Most CT's left tank drains faster as mine does. If I want the fuel to drain equally on long flights I fly 1/2 ball out to the left. The fuel in the right tank will slowly transfer over to the left tank and all will be equal. The fuel will follow the ball.So you want the ball out to the side with the low or faster draining tank. So if you have 12 gal. in the right tank and 7 in the left, fly with the ball 1/2-1 ball out to the left. A half a ball keeps them equal and a full ball out will actually transfer fuel. There is no fix and other aircraft whether LSA or GA world have the same problem. It really isn't a big deal to fly 1/2 ball out to the left. The other fix is to try to adjust the EFIS so the ball is adjusted better. There are 1800 plus CT's in the world and 360+ in the US and everyone seems to work with it just fine.
