I guess that if you have a lowish hours or any 2006 engine it would be worrying. I know my local Rotax engineer checked the manufacturing date of his engine and said that if it was in the suspect date range he would have replaced the tappets and camshaft straight away if any of the components had a rough or worn finish. Of course even inspecting the parts would mean a big disassembly of the engine. Much cheaper than a £15,000 bill though. Otherwise I suppose the only way to spot problems is inspection of the mag plug (and one in the oil tank if one can be fitted)every 25 hours or before a critical over water flight. One advantage of more regular oil and filter changes I guess. It would be nice to be able to make a way of adding an easily inspectable mag plug in the oil pipework at the right point. I am now adding some Redline Break In ZDDP additive to my oil regardless

    Jolyon,

For lack of something to do a couple of years ago, I magnetized my oil dipstick. Don't know if it was worth the effort, but now I check for metal every time I check the oil.

Yes, I have tried to magnetise the dip stick but its very weak and bonding a proper magnet to it would need a lot of research etc. We are still toying with a string magnetic plug in one of the upper oil lines so it has easy access etc. My brand new engine has two faulty carb floats in the port carb - see new topic!

It won't be worth trying to magnetize the dip stick. By the time you might see anything the engine is done and you are already on the ground. The mag plug would do a far better job except if you have a lifter failure it happens like you flipped a light switch and your done. When I had engine engine in my shop with a lifter that was destroyed the mag plug was coated in metal, the oil filter had some fine dust and the oil tank had very little fine metal. Ran the oil over some heavy magnets.
