914 turbo issues
We are located in central Kenya, Africa. We fly the M24 up to 3-4 hours a day doing anti poaching patrols, assisting in Kenya Wildlife Service in protecting the animals of Kenya…..most specifically Elephants.
We are not that mechanically inclined, and are thousands of km away from any Rotax mechanics.
I will try and explain the issues we are having with the Rotax, the flying conditions, and other info you may need.
Misc Info
Elevation….2500-3500 feet ASL at our current location
Air Temperature…..early mornings 65 deg F…….Mid day 80-90 deg F…..late afternoon 70 d F
Winds…..variable 10 to 40 knots
Pilot weight 180 pounds
Passenger weight 120 pounds
Airstrip surface sand
Airstrip length 900 meters
Rotax info
Engine hours approx 170
At all times all temperatures and pressures are with in Rotax specs
At take off, with full throttle the most manifold pressure, all we can get is 35 and the RPM is 5600
At 1000 feet AGL full throttle is still 35MP and the RPM is 5300 to 5600
Cruise generally is done at 27-30 MP
Anti poaching patrols are generally done “ low and slow”” but full power is needed to get out of tight spots etc.
So quite obviously the Turbo is not cutting in, or if it does, its only for a very short while and then cuts out again.
Our non professional thinking is that it is a waste gate issue? Or an air box temperature sensor issue? But since we have a very limited knowledge of the engine… not sure.
Thanks for taking the time to read the above, and we welcome any advise or suggestions you can give us
