We are all aware of the pros and cons of using avgas and mogas, and that Rotax prefer mogas-95 or 98 octane to be used. We also appreciate that avgas has some advantages due to its higher octane rating.

An aircraft engineer at my local airport has suggested that the best aircraft fuel is mogas with a little avgas mixed in as well.

Does anyone have good information regarding such a cocktail, and the optimum amount of avgas?

    Hi Roger,

There are some who mix. many mix because they use 87 oct (AKI in the US) auto fuel then mix the 100LL to raise the octane. The blend to do this is at least 50/50 and no less 100LL. More is okay for the 100LL, but not less or you may not get to the 91 oct. (AKI) rating you need.
Bottom line is lead is lead whether full strength or not. It just may take longer to to form serious deposits.

Thank you Roger for that comment..a follow up question if you don't mind....if one is using the highest octane mogas... Here it is 98 RON-what % avgas would make the best mix, or would no mix be the optimum preferable in your opinion =

    Hi Roger,

98 Ron is about 93 octane in the US. You only need at 91 Octane. I would just use that 98 Ron auto fuel and wouldn't mix at all. Most of us here in the US use 91 octane and a lot of that is with 10% ethanol. Auto fuel is better for the engine than 100LL because of the lead in the 100LL.
