A silicone thermal transfer paste should be applied to all 912 and 914 engine spark plugs. This is in the manual.
    No anti-seize.

Here's two pictures of the #1 and #3 spark plugs. They were removed after approx 100 hrs.
Fuel was mostly Mogas 93 octane with 10%E. The #3 plug is near perfect with the tan color while the #1 is much darker. I had thought this to be a problem until I called Dean Vogel.

Dean, from Lockwood Aviation, said it's normal for the 912 engines.

It is normal for an engine after a prolonged idle, it is not normal if that engine has been running at cruise rpm and immediately shut down. Are your plug gaps between .023-.027? The black deposits are due to an imbalance of air flow at idle rpms, but should go away at higher normal running rpms. I have seen hundreds of dry black soot plugs from the normal idle issue. Yours to me looked more cooked on like the black never goes away. I would change the plugs and fly a couple of hours and check them again. Once with a prolonged idle and once with a shut down immediately after a high rpm run.
Many of us tend to toss plugs at 75 hrs. Verses a 100 hrs, but that's a personal preference.

    Hi Roger,

Those plugs were the original from the factory. I did not check the gap when I removed them. The plugs were changed on a cold engine. The idle time before shut down was approx. 3-4 minutes after taxi back to the hangar. Plugs were changed the next day.

If you suggest the plugs be changed after 75 hours I can certainly do that.

When it's time to change the current set, I'll run at a higher RPM just before shut down and see what they look like. I believe I'm just about at that mark now.

    Thanks
    Rich
