    Hi Rhett,

If all hull designs and pilot needs were the same this would be an easier topic. Here are a few variables. Hull design and wing type can play a big difference here. Airfield elevation and average flight altitudes play in some. Pilot needs play in some. For instance if you have a short take-off and landing aircraft and fly out of backfield short air strips you may want a better climb prop setup. If you fly out of a low elevation airfield, but always fly up at 8k-10k ft. Then you would need to tune the prop for that. Since there are so many people here with different needs and planes we tend to make more general statements over something really specific.
Hull design is a huge factor. 5600 for one plane may see 120 knots while the next guy with a little dirtier hull may only see 85 knots. For me if you really don't need the extra climb then 5800 at WOT is losing some of the top speed and fuel economy. The nice thing about a ground adjustable prop is if you try one setting you can always go back or change it. If you are up at 5800 rpm WOT then you might try and add 1/2 degree back to coursen the pitch. Then go fly and see if you like it. A prop pitch change usually only takes me 30 min. on most planes.

Try the 5600-5650 rpms few times and then make up your mind if you like it better. This rpm at WOT should give you a good climb, better cruise and a tad better fuel economy. My best guess is you'll like 5600-5650 rpm @ WOT.

We are looking for a good balance in prop settings to best complement our engine/plane configuration and then to also meet our personal needs. That said you can go too far either way with pitch and start to loose ground or over stress the engine.

    Hi Andy,

Where is your clip now and what are the EGT's in cruise rpm (5100-5400 rpm)? Cruise rpms and EGT's will be different for everyone, but at least should be in the same ballpark.

Hi Roger, I only have CHT, no EGT, the clip is in the third position from the top .

    Hi Andy,
Unless you have a special need to lean or more than just the CHT then the #3 position is probably a good place to be.
