"Thomas Uhr, General Manager BRP-Powertrain said, “The collaboration of BRP-Rotax with Shell goes back to 2004. Our decision to work with the AeroShell team on the development of the new formulation for AeroShell Oil Sport Plus 4 was based on the benefits the new formulation would provide to our customers. This joint development is supported by 40 years of Rotax aircraft engines, 25 years and more than 50.000 engines produced within the Rotax 912/914 engines with more than 45 million hours of flight."

We have had great experience with other oils that were tested to the Rotax requirements and listed on the previous issue of the SI. We have had a very good experience with the Skydrive Aerolube, why have Rotax taken this stance?

Rob, where can we obtain a copy of the Rotax RON 424 standard to see what other oils might be suitable?

Shell AeroSport 4 oil containers have 2 dates printed on the oil bottle.
The first seems to be a manufacturing date.

The other is a RT date.
Can someone explain the RT (re-test date)?
Why do we need to have a re-test?
Can the oil be used if it is passed the RT date code?

I use aerosport 4 and noticed the other day, there is no viscosity spec on the bottle.
Unusual as most oils have this?
As I run only unleaded, I wonder if full synthetic would be better?
I understand the aerosport is a semi-synthetic so the lead in avgas is retained in the oil?

    Hi Rhett,

Aero Shell is a semi synthetic 10-40W. A full synthetic doesn't suspend the lead as the semi synthetic. If you use 91 oct auto fuel then either works. If you use 100ll a lot then stay with the semi synthetic.

Does anyone have any experience with Belay semi-synthetic motorcycle oil? I have been using this oil exclusively for more than 8 years and 600 hours. Phil Lockwood says that motorcycle oils no longer have sufficient amounts of anti-war additives for the Rotax engines. Any opinions please?
