One mag now runs rough during the mag check (old style ignition – early 80hp). Still within 50-125rpm of the other mag, and about 200rpm from both. But that one mag feels rough and the RPM varies up and down, up and down, when on that rough mag. All connectors have been cleaned and reassembled. If I switch red stator wires, the same mag runs rough through the mag check (the problem does not switch to the other mag).

But when I do a full throttle run for 10 seconds or more, and then return to 4,000 and again do the mag check, it usually is smooth and same drop on each mag as if the problem disappeared. I keep doing this again and again, and the results are the same. I’ve installed new plugs DCPR7E and gapped them .025”, torqued to 180 in-lb and this made no change.

I could always change my pre-flight by doing a full throttle run and then returning to 4000rpm and get good results, but I don’t think this is advisable.

Ideas? Perhaps further isolation by switching 4-pin connectors? What would that tell me?

Someone might be interested in my solution.

The hard staring was solved by completely cleaning and rebuilding the carburetors including the throttle plate screws and throttle shaft O-ring. Probably the hard starting was caused by frayed and deteriorated idle air and idle jet O-rings (these were the worst). The rest of the O-rings were intact, but stiff and needed to be replaced.

The mag check roughness on B mag was caused by my repeated improper removal of the top plug wires under the carburetors by yanking on the wires to help pull the caps off the plugs – ignition circuit B, 3-4 top. Re-connecting the caps to the wires fully resolved the mag roughness.
