I am replacing my sprag clutch , the manual says to install circlip with the sloped angle towards the clutch , my circlip is the new one , I can not see a slopped edge on it , does the new one not have a slope ?can someone explain thanx , ivan Alaska

    Just so we are on the same page...
    The circlips are traditionally produced by a stamping operation.
    That produces one side with a slightly Rounded/Slopping edge on it.
    The other side will be much sharper sometimes approaching a Burr or at least a "Wire Edge".

    If the new clip was laser cut or water jetted or some other modern process, both sides may be nearly the same.
    As long as the sharper side, if any, is away from the clutch, you are good.

    The rounded edge has a slightly easier chance of jumping out of the groove under extremely heavy loads.
    The sharper edge has more of a tendency to dig in under stress.

    I have always understood that the angle on the end of the clip was there so you had some place to pry them out.
    I suppose that if they are always stamped consistently you can use the direction of the gap to identify the sharp edge after installation.

    HERE is a good instruction sheet from Jabiru Aircraft that applies to Circlips in general.

    Thank you for all the great info , I understand it now , I'll never let my battery get weak again , hope I don't have to replace sprag clutch ant time soon again , seems like s weak point in the starting system , only 98 hours on my engine .
