A friend of mine recently bought an RV-12 with a Rotax 912 ULS engine.

Over the years he has owned many aircraft including several aircraft with radial engines. He told me of a number of occasions where Marvel Mystery Oil was used as an additive.

He asked me if I had ever heard of it being used as an additive with the Rotax engine.

I told him I had not but was no authority and I would post it on our forum.

I would appreciate any thoughts, advice or insight on this question.

Thank you for you time.

    Hi Bob,

Yes I have heard of it. There are no studies with use long term in a Rotax. No one knows the long term effects.
Don't. The risk will outweigh any benefit.

    Mystery Oil???
If what you are doing is a Mystery, Why are you doing it?
Don't even get me started about "Fuel Stabilizers" !!!
There are dozens of unproven fuel additives designed to make you feel like you are doing something beneficial, but mostly they just make someone else a lot of money.

The Marine Groups have even more Vodo, Mojo, Talisman products that the Automotive Groups.

It is reasonable that at the end of the boating season, a 4:1 mixture of Gasoline and Two Stroke Oil is introduced to the engine for 30 seconds before shutdown to deposit a coating of oil on the cylinders and exhaust system for the long winter storage. You drain the Fuel Filter and refill it with the oily gas mixture. When you see oil in the exhaust, you're done.

50:1 Two Stroke fuel will run just fine in a Four Stroke engine. But it just isn't necessary.
If you feel an overwhelming need to add a magic potion to your fuel,
At least the Two Stroke Oil has a long history of passing through combustion chambers without causing problems.
And Prevents rust in the exhaust to boot!

Some folks even add 1 ounce of Two Stroke Oil per 5 gallons (<1:600) of their 4 Stroke Fuel.
They claim it keeps the exhaust valves lubed.

NEVER consider doing this is there is a Catalytic Converter in the system.

Bottom line. Nothing needs to be added to your engine for longevity. Longevity comes from good preventive and detailed maint.
Just do what the manual recommends and you're good.

    p.s.
Don't do what Joe next door says if he has no clue about these engines.
