Why does the 80hp 912ul have a larger main jet than the 100hp 912uls?

It also has a different needle size. It's just the way the fuel delivery needs to be for a different size cylinder setup and compression. Something some engineer figured out a long time ago and then was proven on dyno testing.
Here's a list of jet sizes that may be in the 912UL, 912ULS and the 914. Not to mention the 914 has one needle clip in a different slot than the other. If you live at high altitude and fly high all the time you may have both needle clips in a leaner position.

    261-607 NEEDLE JET 2.72
    261-608 NEEDLE JET 2.70
    268-985 MAIN JET 160
    268-984 MAIN JET 155
    268-996 MAIN JET 158

    963-143 IDLE JET 35

    268-758 JET 85
    268-762 JET 105
    268-763 JET 130
    268-765 JET 140

    Thanks Roger,

A few mates were wondering if it was a typo when I told them that the 80hp needs a larger jet than the 100hp.

    Andrew.
