The POH for my Van’s RV-12 says that using the starter motor for 10 seconds is an “Alternative” method for burping its   Rotax 912 ULS  engine. I’ve tried the starter motor a couple of times, and it did not work. I have to burp it by hand, the way Bill Hertzel describes above.

I think a lot of folks don't like burping because they think you have to rapidly turn the prop in a continuous motion, which can be very tiring. The right way, as Bill describes, is not tiring at all. Just turn it slowly until resistance is felt and hold it there or push very slowly thru the resistance, then go to the next resistance spot and repeat-easy peasy. One other thing I do to make it even easier and quicker is after the last flight before I put it away, I turn it thru about half dozen blades to pump much of the oil into the reservoir so during the next pre-flight burp only a few more blades are required to complete the burp; in other words, do it in two easy stages.

Tyler it ain’t about exercise, it’s about arthritis! Have you ever been to an EAA AirVenture? We are an older group. Actually in the US it is a law one can’t build a kit plane unless one’s hair is grey.

Well, if you do it the way I did, you lose all your hair before it goes gray... sealed
