Hello,

Need some help.  Building a Rans S7 with an Edge 912sti engine.  I have the Edge second large (32amp) alternator and did the first start today and welded both my alternator relays shut!  I wanted the ability to run the factory Rotax 912 stator or the Edge stator independently so I wired the output from the voltage regulators to high amp (75amp) relays before they join the main buss.  I also thought I was smart and added a large capacitor on the output of the VR's to help absorb any shock if the relays were switched off in flight.  Well to my surprise if the engine is running with the VR output relay open the capacitors are charging up to 60v and when I do close the relay connecting the VR to the battery the relay contacts obviously aren't happy and arc. So my question is, how if any can you turn on and off a Ducati voltage regulator?  Like turning the field on and off on a standard alternator.  I don't want to fly with both on in flight but want the ability to switch in flight if needed.  Should I just move the capacitor to the other side of the relay?  Can the VR handle having no place to go with the output?  Hope this makes seance and any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

Shawn Jordan

    All fixed!

Wiring mistake on my part.  I had the sense wire going to the bus side and not VR output so when the relay was opened the VR still saw say 14v even though it was putting out 60v.  Moved sense wire to VR output and now it stays at 14v.  Now to see how much damage I did to the VR's letting them output 60v for a few minutes!
