Greetings,

This is just to pass along some information.  I've often read that there was a 20-30 degree F difference when using Evans vs 50/50 DexCool.  I wanted to test that theory and get my CHTs down a bit.  I've been using Evans, and switched to 50/50 DexCool as a test.  The numbers below are from 2 consecutive days, both in the low 90's F temp.  Similar climb and brief cruise for both.  I'm definitely a believer.

The highest CHT went from 248 with Evans, to 221 with Dex.  A brief cruise at 5300 rpm gave 242 with Evans, and 216 with Dex.

Coolant temp went from 216 with Evans, to 208 with Dex.  A brief cruise at 5300 rpm gave 212 with Evans, and 200 with Dex.

The second note is about radiator caps.  Rotax wants something like $85 for their 1.2 bar cap, and it's been reported that the BMW 17112345074 works.  The only places I found that listed were close to $50.  I read a couple posts that said the Triumph T2108005 cap was supposed to work, but I never found anyone who had actually tried it.  Since they're only $14 each, I ordered a couple to try in place of my old tired caps.  They looks very similar in all dimensions, and fit fine.  Ground runs showed no leaks.  The caps have 1.2 printed on them, and feel about the same as the stock cap.  One interesting thing I noticed was that they're made in Austria :-)

    Water based 50/50 coolant has better heat absorption and heat release over Evans because it has no water. This is one reason fire departments use water to cool fires and cause heat reduction plus water is chape vs other fire suppression agents.

    When I tried Evans many years ago I had a 20F - 30F temp increase. I went right back to 50/50.

    Evans isn't even an option anymore on "new" (since 2013) engines.

    for us flying in cooler climates, with the radiator taped up mostly Evans could work.  But why use water free coolant. Does it have any benefits apart from higher boiling point ?   Is this the reason to use it ?

    As I understand it, another down side to waterless coolants is;

    Away from home, need a coolant top up for some reason - you cant use water (even if its pure). The cooling system would have to be flushed clean and then a glycol/water coolant used.

    As for radiator caps; I purchased my last cap from a Ducati motorcycle dealership - same part number as Rotax. It was a few years back , but if aging memory serves, it was about $14 Australian (so $7 US).

    I wasn't trying to spark a debate about waterless coolant.  I was simply providing some actual data for anyone who might be deciding what to use in an older engine where Rotax allows it.  I've always liked Evans, but will likely stick with conventional coolant in the future.
