In the absence of a proper video, could you give me some pointer please lads.
I watched the video and have already stripped mine down ready to tank. You obviously have a great deal of knowledge, could you post something to aide me putting them back together. I havent taken out the butterfly, but have removed the enrichers.
    thanks

    Dave,

If you were not having any trouble with the carbs I wouldn't remove the butterfly valves. You can wiggle the shafts and see if there is any excessive sideplay. Open the butterfly and feel the the the throat of the carb with your finger where the butterfly closes against it. Small amounts of roughness there (if any) can be removed with a small piece of fine scotchbrite. The edge of the butterfly itself is not at right angles to the butterfly face. If you look closely you will see that the edge is tapered to fit the throat in one direction only. The valve is also punchmarked to indicate which way it goes. The screws are peened and can be difficult to remove sometimes and must be peened again when replaced. ALWAYS use a bucking bar of some sort against the screws when peening or you can bend the shaft.

If you haven't removed the valve needle yet,be sure to heat the seat to loosen the thread sealant so you can remove the retaining screw. Don't use a torch or open flame or you may damage the O ring on the needle. When you replace the O ring be sure it goes on top of the E clip, not under it.

The enrichener discs and shafts are different for the right and left carbs. If you go to section 73.00.00 of the heavy maintenance manual you will see how to identify the right and left shafts and discs and how to align the punch marks. If you don't have the heavy maintenance manual, you can download it from the support section on this site.

There are plenty of other guys on this forum who know know more about this than I do and I'm sure they can help you too.

    Good luck,

    Bill.

I always remove the butterfly. It has two "O" rings that could leak or be split. It is easy to remove. The screws are peened over on the thread side. I take a Dremel tool and grind down the thread until it is flush with the control arm. Then the peened part is gone. Then just unscrew them. The full rebuild kit comes with all the carb "O" rings and both of these screws. When you put the butterfly back in there is a punch mark on one side and should be positioned on top and facing outward. Then put your new screws in. Then I have a piece of 1 3/8" x 5" long piece of hard aluminum rod. I clamp it end up in my vise and set the carb down on top of it through the carb end with the screw heads down against the rod end. This supports the butter fly and arm. I take a punch and a small hammer and peen each screw head some so it can't come out and go into the engine. This isn't a hard procedure and it takes just a couple of minutes. It allows you to do a complete carb rebuild of all the "O" rings. Those two "O" rings get a lot of wear and tear as the carb throttle gets moved constantly back and forth. If you haven't had someone show you all the little ins and outs the first time I would get instruction because you can make mistakes.
