Re: Rotax 912 80hp Is the gascolator on my airplane enough of a fuel filter

Hi Lee,
Good advice however it needs to be recognised that anything that can be dismantled/opened, for inspection/service, is at risk of leaking at some time in its operational life. For the most part, servisable filters require replacement of "rubber" seals from time to time, adding additional cost to what can be a low cost simple in field service ie replace the whole filter, no need to flush, blow out.
Further most metal cased filters are heavier & more expensive than their "plastic" equivalent.
Companies like Baldwin and Hengst specialise in filter design/construction - They are very unlikly to sell products that can be adversely affected by any fuel currently available.
On the last point - Unfortunatly it is not uncommon for filter retailers to sell substitute, look alike filters, of unknown quality/performance. I would advise anyone purchasing automotive style filters, to be absolutely sure they are getting a product from a reputable manufacturer.

FD owners have been using the same filter and not had to replace anything since 2005. Weight is so minor it’s a non issue. They are small. We’re only talking about an aluminum filter 2” long and about 1” in diameter with a fine mesh stainless steel screen inside. These work very well when placed before a fuel flow transducer.

Hi Roger,
Do you have a name, part number and supplier of your ".....aluminum filter 2” long and about 1” in diameter with a fine mesh stainless steel screen inside" ?

Hi Sean,
I’m out of town this week. I’ll have to wait until I get home. It’s on my computer.

Roger , When you get the time I would be interested in a metal filter that you described .
I found this on another Rotax disccusion forum : https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ear-230103erl#overview
Earl's Performance Inline Fuel Filters
Earl's Performance inline fuel filters are designed for use as pre-filters to provide maximum protection for fuel systems. They're available with your choice of an 85 micron screen-type element or a 35 micron sintered bronze element. Either style can be easily disassembled for inspection and cleaning. The filter housings are available in a wide range of male AN fitting sizes for use with Earl's high performance fuel lines and fittings. Also available with hose barb ends (bronze element only), they have a fuel flow of 4 to 5 gpm and come with an anodized finish in a choice of colors. Replacement sintered bronze filter elements also sold separately.
The sintered bronze element worries me a bit .........I would prefer a filter with a steel mesh filtration .
