If your prop shaft splines are as worn as mine were then it will be very obvious when you disassemble the gearbox. If access is good in your aircraft then removing the box is no more than a 30 minute job. You will need access to a press to remove the internal components before you can inspect the splines. I posted my box to a specialist who did this for me and I had an answer the following day.

Disc springs and Belleville washers are the same thing.

    Hi Jonathan,

If you have never stripped down a gearbox or inspected one you should either send it in to someone or get with someone experienced in doing this. You can make mistakes and miss a problem that should be addressed, not to mention you may need a tool or two.

Thanks again chaps for the info and advice. I like to do as much work as I can and will be happy to remove the gearbox myself with the help of the video on here but I know my limitations and that's where it stops for me! I'll be sending it away to have it professionally serviced! Cheers, Jon

    Hi Jonathan,

I had pretty much the same thing, did all the same stuff as has been suggested, including gearbox inspection (it was ok). Turned out that it was all due to loose/soft engine mount rubbers, cheap and simple to fix, perhaps you should look there first? They don't cost much, make sure the engine mount bolts are torqued up right, give it a go. Just a thought.
