912ULS 900 hrs TT

After sitting in the hanger for several days, before I fly, I pull the prop through several times and burp the oil tank before I start the engine and go fly. I have recently noticed one weak cylinder when pulling it through. It starts okay, has full power on take off, no vibrations or roughness, no noises, and seems to run as well as it always has.

On landing there is NO weak cylinder pulling the prop through several rotations. The cylinder is still good the next day, but then gets weak again after several days.

I can only think of a hydraulic lifter bleeding down. Have not pulled any valve covers or done a compression test yet, just trying to figure what it could be before I really get to looking.

Is there any history of the lifters giving out (900 hrs time). I can't remember any posts on this forum about such a problem

    Hi Dale,

I doubt it's a lifter. If you think you have an issue I would do the standard compression leak down test. I have done tons of them both with a hot engine and a cold one. Even with a cold Rotax engine the compression is no more than 1 psi different than a hot one. Give it a try cold and see what comes up. If the leak down test is good then I wouldn't worry about it. Then if you want start the engine get it hot and try it again.

This doesn't sound like a lifter problem. If a lifter were to bleed down, it wouldn't result in a "soft" compression situation. Just the opposite. A collapsed lifter would cause the associated valve to be closed even longer than normal. Your symptoms might be associated with an intermittently sticking valve??? Have you burned a lot of 100LL and maybe built up some valve stem deposits?? This is typical on Lycoming engines, but I don't recall it being an issue with ROTAX 912s.
