Dear Rotax-Owners

I blew my 966726 SMD modules with a reverse polarity battery charger connection. I can't afford new ones, but was able to find a pair of good used 966721's. I cannot find a wiring diagram for the 966721.

As far as I know there are two differences:
• The 966721 has a 4 pin + 6 pin + 1 pin plugs, the 966726 has a 6 pin + 6 pin plug.
• The 966726 can be wired to provide a soft-start function, via the starter switch.

I never connected the soft-start function, so my question is, if I change the plugs, can I use the 966721?

Blue skies

The wiring diagram is maybe Fig. 74-19 in the heavy maintenance manual, section 74-00-00, page 27, October 01/2010?

This is not an easy job but it can be done. It is also not approved by Rotax. Every pin and socket need to be replaced as they were switched from male to female/female to male at the coil connection with the introduction of the 6/6 pin connector.
The trigger coil wires may need to be extended (spliced) to avoid strain.
Make sure you use the stainless steel bracket that supports the six-pin connectors; it has made a huge difference in reliability.
If you are good at avionics and have the proper tools it is a fun project.
Note: No soldering the wires!!!! Use the correct open barrel crimper and aviation splices (Raychem D436 are nice for this job as they are very low profile). Do not forget to install the rubber grommets to seal the wires.

Thank you, Rob, very good info, I missed the part where I may have to extend the trigger coil wires. But yes, a fun project, as always :-)

    Arthur,

Forgive my ignorance but how does a reverse polarity connection to the battery damage the ignition modules since they are not powered by the battery?

I have seen someone selling some adapter looms to allow you to do what you are proposing.

Not cheap but would allow either to be used.

    Dear Kevin

I'm just as ignorant and I have exactly the same question :-)

I found a post somewhere (but cannot find it again, I think it was right here on Rotaxowner), that a momentary reverse polarity battery connection would blow the modules. I had reversed the polarity of my plug-in low amperage charger and had it in for a few hours. This is the only mistake I could possibly have made and afterwards both modules where dead.

Your adapter cables are in fact quite cheap, considering what Rotax charges for the connectors with pins, if they were closer to me I would definitely have bought a pair. Right now I'm going to use Würth automotive waterproof connectors, similar to the picture below.
