  • Re: Question about oil pressure and when it bypasses

    I am so confused!!!!

I called Lockwood to get the mushroom style valve, bolt, and new spring since I'm about to take everything apart.

I talked with Joe, technical support, he said that's normal for pressure to go down to 30 psi and said it can go down to 22.

Was thinking that the pressure fluctions may be caused by the thermostat being open sometimes and closed others?

Because I'm that, worried about purging with it installed and I like to keep it simple, I was going to remove it today, but now dont know what to do!!

    Thoughts please

As Bill and roger said you need to verify that the suction side is unrestricted. That includes the cooler and the suction hose going back to the tank. As the oil gets hot the oil line can start to collapse due to suction which will restrict flow thereby causing a decrease in pressure. If you have any doubts (check the part # on hose reference its specifications), just replace it with the proper hose. Some people have installed a spring internally in the hose to prevent collapse. When putting it back together try to completely fill the suction hose and cooler so that there is less air in the system during the purge. Watch the videos on purging and checking for a soft lifter.

    Thx Garret,

I am currently doing that now.
    I'm also removing the thermostat.
I live by the the kiss philosophy.

I also read that the temps they operate do not usually match what's needed for the rotax. It also takes that out of the possiblity.

    Thx again!

Yeah, remove the thermostat keep it simple. My Remos GX has a cockpit panel control that opens and closes a door in front of the oil cooler so temps can be manually controlled for a fast warm up and adjustment if needed.

The thermostat in an engine is the reverse of what you might logically think.
It does Not keep the engine cool. It keeps the engine Hot.
Removing the thermostat is only going to make the engine run colder.

A thermostat may typically operate (Open or Close) when it reaches 185°F.
This means that there will be limited or NO cooling below 185°F.
This allows a cold engine to warm up quickly.
Once it reaches 185°F the Oil/Coolant Radiators control the Temperatures.
If the Radiators are sufficiently large and the Ambient Temperatures are low, the temperatures may not climb any higher.

    Something to keep in mind.
