Cracked Ignition Housing
During a 50 hour visual inspection, I discovered a large crack near the top of the ignition housing on my 912uls with 850 hours, S/N 6779693. Not sure how long it may have been there. I had flown for 3 hours the day before with no indications of trouble. I have several questions for you experts:
- What could have caused this on a perfectly smooth running engine for 850 hours?
- Is this a common failure or an unusual one? The crack appears to have started at the lower rivet hole for the nameplate.
- Is it dangerous to continue flying in this condition until I can arrange repairs?
- Is removal and replacement of the ignition housing a difficult procedure requiring special tools, expertise, etc.
Thanks.
