Daniele Carlo Brotto wrote:Yah, there will be a drop in voltage when the starter load is engaged. This is due to the high current coursing through wiring, connections, battery impedance, and original battery source voltage and condition. My described voltage "collapse" was seeing the Lane voltage tape that I display on the Dynon well into the Yellow range. With my latest setup, the voltage drop is minimal.
There is a lot of information on Odyssey AGM batteries here:
AMER-EN-TM-ODY.pdf (odysseybattery.com)
You must use a charger designed for AGM and not just flooded Lead Acid batteries. The referenced manual states that you need to supply 40% of the rated current to charge a fully discharged battery. So in the case of your battery that would mean 40% of 16 AHr or 6.4 Amps. So the 8 A, AGM setting on this charger should work:
Note that there are other references that say 10% to 25% of the battery AHr rating is sufficient.
In actual use, the battery is never really being charged from a highly discharged state. The manual states that a "maintenance" regime to keep the battery topped off is suitable (0.5 to 1.5 amp range). I've been using the 2 Amp version of the Battery Minder AGM charger with good results.
What charger are you presently using?
d.
I went ahead and bought this one from Spruce: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/batteryminder_11-19241.php
The $92 price of the 2A one was very attractive. But I figured it would be smarter to have the 8A version in case I ever have a flat battery. I'll hook this one up overnight once it arrives and see if it changes any behavior or not. But my PC680 battery is virtually new and was just installed a couple months ago.
The charger I've been using is a Meanwell enc-240-12 16 amp 12v charger. My A&P actually gave it to me so I have to assume it's designed for AGM.

That Mean Well ENC-240-12 charger may or may not be working correctly for an AGM battery. It depends on the settings of the DIP switches on the back of the unit. See the bottom of page 5 in this datasheet:
https://www.meanwell.com/webapp/product/search.aspx?prod=ENC-240
It can also be programmed to provide a custom charging profile for your exact battery model. This requires the programmer...

...and the PC software (second item on this page):

The manual for the software is here:

Appreciate that info, Eric. I guess it's a good thing I just bought the BatteryMinder designed specifically for the Odyssey battery that I have as I assume that has the right programming by default, as I have no idea how to program the Mean Well unit.

If you're no longer using the Mean Well and you're willing to sell it, I'd be interested...

I was going to give it to a friend, but how much are you offering?
