    Hi Jim,
I have 230 hrs on my IS engine. The surprising thing to me is what you leave behind...

    Easy to start
    Runs very smooth
    No Carb balancing
    No Carb ice worries
    No shock cooling concerns
No worrying about Lean/rich...just use the throttle to go faster.
    Burns very little fuel...
It will tell you if anything goes wrong in flight so you do not need to stress about scanning engine instruments so much...although we probable should still do it.

I have seen arguments that the fuel saving does not pay for the extra cost vs the ULS, I suspect that is correct. But that leaves out all the other benefits.

As you can see there is little downside...It costs more of course and needs more wiring and battery size for all that extra sensors and electrics. But i think it is well worth it.

What plane are you putting it in ?

    Cheers

    Glenn

    Hi Jim,

It's a good engine and I think you will enjoy it.

I'm about 3-4 weeks away from my first engine start with the 912 iS Sport (in a Sling 2 - see pic attached).
I'm getting pretty excited about the whole thing now, after never really ever thinking I would finish building!

Glenn - very encouraging to read the benefits of the engine... I am really looking forward to flying down to Margaret River (from Perth in West Australia) and back on around 30 litres of fuel (and mogas at that, around $1 per litre!).

Will put some posts up to let you know how it goes..

I have to choose beetwen these two engines : 912ULS or 912iS. I prefer the 912iS, even if it is more expensive. And it seems to be better for take off and for cruising. The fuel economy will gives more cruising aptitudes because if i want to fly for 4 hours, I will need 4 to 6 gal less than the ULS. With this example, I need 15kg less fuel than a 912ULS. And as the weight off the 912iS is about 7kg heavier than the 912ULS, this shows that the performance of an 912iS aircraft are best for long distances.

Let's say that for more than 2.8 hours (if we take the economy gap of 1 gal/h between 912ULS and 912iS), the aircraft equiped with the 912iS will be lighter than the same one equiped with a 912ULS.

Sorry for my poor English (I am french).

What Glenn say is all true. I have enjoyed my iS for 2 years now. There are a couple downsides besides extra cost. It is heavier than the ULS and fewer mechanics have experience with it. My biggest issue though with it is the false alarms. Its sophistication comes from the extra electronics/sensors which tend to give off false alarms due to their digital nature. (See the Lane B light problem thread as an example.)
