Hi. I was wondering where the documentation is for the EMS error messages that come up on the Dynon? (I have a “coil 4” message). I searched the Operators, Owners and maintenance manuals for “dynon” and nothing came up. “lane”  and B.U.D.S. barely came up. What am I missing?

    Andrew,

I would not expect that Rotax faults would be well explained by Dynon. Those codes don't seem to be documented anywhere, and instead are passed along like Tribal Knowledge, with some of this information being presented through the Rotax classes. As far as the BUDS diagnostic tool, that connects to the ECU directly through the Rotax CAN bus so Dynon has nothing to do with it. If you don't already know this, the BUDS (BRM Utility & Diagnostic Software) consists of a physical dongle and and software package that will cost you about $1K for the Level 2 system. You will get more diagnostic information than is presented on your Dynon, but there is a learning curve for both setup and effective use. Also, there is no documentation that comes with the BUDS system that explains the error codes. You get a dongle and a cable, then download the software. All that said, I believe this tool is a must for 912iS owner who will do their own maintenance.

The "Coil 4" message is pretty specific, and as was suggested by another member in your last topic, you can start with the basics of checking the connections at Coil 4 and the spark plugs and wires associated with it. Coil 4 is controlled by Lane B, and fires the top plugs on Cylinders 3 & 4.  A coil 4 problem should be the most obvious when Lane A is turned off while Lane B is running the engine. This is because Lane A controls the bottom plugs (Coil 3) on those same two cylinders, and turning off Lane A leaves Coil 4 as the only ignition circuit for them.
