Last year during my annual ,they said I should change (flush) the water/antifreez and they did. Ever since then the overflow bottle over flows when it is hot but disapers (from the bottle) when it's cold Any suggesttion?

    Hi Mark,

It sounds like a coolant tank cap problem. It is either not on straight or you may need a new cap. During to coolant change the cap rubber may have been damaged. I would try a new cap. If you have a buddy near by with the same engine try his cap.

The overflow is working like it should, the coolant expands when hot and if there's to much coolant in the bottle it will over flow, it will seek the correct level by overflowing the excess, when the engine cools the coolant will be sucked back into the engine leaving a small amount of coolant in the overflow bottle.

The problem I have with all the flow back and forth is I don't personally know anyone else having that kind of flow back and forth issue. All the 912 owners I know don't have any flow out, nor do they loose any coolant so the reservoir stays at the same level for each flight and up to two years. It is working like it is supposed to, but why is it flowing in and out all the time?

You might check the cap pressure, if the wrong cap was put on it (to low) it would let the coolant flow but I don't know if I would worry about it, if the bottle has coolant and the pressure tank on top of the engine is full to the *brim* the cooling system is working correctly.

I have a older 912s and it doesn't have a coolant recovery tank just a overflow hose so maybe the cap pressure changed with the addition of a recovery tank, I'm going to have to find out because I want to put one on my plane.

    Ted,
There are 2 differebnt pressure caps - 0.9 and 1.2 bar - the 1.2bar being the current type.

The problem Mark talks about does sound like a dud cap - but it might be worth changing the coolant and making sure the mixture is what the aircraft manufacturer recommends. In earlier times rotax said 50% mix but this could give local boiling and most installations now use around 80% ethylene-glycol / distilled water.
