I"m reinstalling the engine on my plane. 912. the book calls for the removal of the drain screw on the water pump. Can I skip that and drain the system from the open radiator low point and gently flush water through or is the impeller so tight that it will pressurize the coolant system. (The screw is difficult to access and I don't have a new crush washer)

    Hi Jay,

I'll tell you an alternate way which may make you laugh and isn't in any manual, but it does work.
I too have had issues with some planes accessing the drain screw on the pump. I have taken the lower coolant radiator hose off and let that drain into a big pan. Then take the coolant cap off and more will drain. Now here is the laughable part. You can circle your hand around the coolant tank and blow down through the system. Do it hard, long and about 4 times. :woohoo: You can even put a rag over the coolant tank and put a little compressed air down the side of the rag and it will blow all the coolant out. So long as t5he system is open no pressure will build. The coolant will come out the bottom of the radiator and the hose so cover them with a rag or you will blow coolant all over the floor.

This may be hard to believe, but it seems to do a really good job and it's faster than using the drain. ;)

    p.s.
If I blow 5 times really hard and long down into the tank I start to feel light headed. I guess I'm showing my age.

Okay now you can quit laughing.

    Hi Rob,

I know, but I had to do it.
I'll just close my eyes and won't read the comments. :silly:

Thanks. I'll close the shop doors and lock them so nobody can walk in on me and my plane.
