Hi

The starter on my Rans S7S has been turning over more slowly of late than it used to and now is barely fast enough to start the engine. It is smooth, just slow. I've check the battery voltage all the way to the starter motor. 12.8v resting, which drops to 9.7 or 9.5 while cranking with ignition off at the starter solenoid and at the starter terminal. (The battery is toward the back of the fuselage.) All terminals appear tight and corrosion free. Engine runs great once it catches. I am using a soft-start module and sometimes i have to use both ignitions to start on because the starter is turning so slowly. Any thoughts?

thanks,

Key

First thought, is try a new battery. It sounds like your battery to me.

    Hi Key,

How old is the engine? Is it. 912UL or ULS? How many hours?
Is your starter black or gold colored?

It is a ULS with about 950 hours on--ten years old. I don't remember the color of the starter but can check tomorrow.
My understanding was that about a 3 volt drop when cranking is normal but that may only be for larger engines with larger batteries. (Mine is a two-year old Odyesses).
    thanks,

If the 9.5v was at the starter, What was the voltage at the battery while cranking?
If the battery voltage is dropping into the 9's while cranking, suspect the Battery.
If the battery voltage is significantly different from the voltage at the starter while cranking, You have a cabling problem.

Looking at connections and declaring them as Good is not a valid test.
Crank for a few seconds and then feel the connections.
The bad ones will be warm.
The really bad ones will be Hot, Very HOT! Be careful of burned fingers!

Place a volt meter's probes at both ends of all the starter cables, including the battery grounds.
The voltage should measure very near Zero on each cable while cranking.
Anything more than a volt indicates a problem.
This is a case where Less is better!

    Hi Key,

A 10 year old or 2006 engine will have the gold colored higher torque starter. Two things here. New battery or not either try another battery or jump it to absolutely rule it out. This is a cheap easy issue to rule out if you take a few minutes and jump it.
Second thought. Have you been getting prop kickback on your starts and if so has it been a while?

    p.s.
If you jump it please be careful.
