I have found the fuel computer very useful tool flying in the Florida Bahamas and Keys with summer time thunderstorms and unexpected winds and deviations around them. The distance to empty redundant fuel gauge a useful tool when negotiating weather over large bodies of water I instantly know my fuel situation. My plane has the fuel lines setup with a return line but the singe fuel meter is plumbed in to only measure fuel going to the carburetors.

One of our Gyro guys had an engine out because the small filter in the fuel flow sensor blocked up.
All fine to have these gadgets but include them in your maintenance schedule.

PS his engine out landing into a paddock was fine - we practice this stuff constantly.

I regard my fuel flow sensor as much more than a gadget; as mentioned before it totalizes and gives fuel and time remaining. I have the return line and my single flow sensor measures total flow to the engine plus return flow. It is very easy to calibrate the sensor so it reads out just flow to the carbs. Since 99% of the time you are cruising at a fairly steady flow to both engine and return (return flow is very small) the calibration will be quite accurate at cruise. There will be definite inaccuracy during Idle, taxi, climbout, and descent, but I have found that the overall accuracy is quite good when all phases of flight are averaged together. If you consistently make short 15 minute flights then a single sensor is not for you. BTW my sensor (red cube) has no built-in filter and the passage thru it will pass quite a large piece of dirt.

What type of fuel flow sensor are you using ? I have a FP-5L fuel computer- Electronics international with 2 sensors fuel in to the injectors and fuel return to header. I have worked with the manufacture to get the sensors calibrated but no luck so I am looking for a better system.

If the sensors are located in the plumbing correctly, A K factor of 68,000 should be close with a slight adjustment to get it correct.

What is the problem with the calibration?
    What engine do you have?
