I have tried a number of times to load the 914 TCU software on my laptop without success, can anyone help?

Because the only modern laptop I had was a Chromebook, I bought the cheapest Windows laptop that Costco sells and then I followed the instructional video on this website (including getting the exact cable they recommend) and that worked for me.

Another good approach is to go to your local 'old school computer tech shop' and pick up a refurbished "ancient" laptop - one that has a DB9 serial port on it. This bypasses all the fussing around with the USB-to-serial-port adapter.

Do keep in mind with any windows operating system earlier than Windows 7 you strictly need to DISABLE the internet connection (XP, Vista, etc. are no longer secure for network use) - so that all file transfers should be done via USB stick. And when Windows 7 reaches its End of Life phase on January 14, 2020, Microsoft will stop releasing updates and patches for that operating system, too.

The TCU tips walkthough video should assist you, in any case. ( see https://www.rotax-owner.com/videos-topmenu/rotax-minute/435-tcutips )
