    Hi Tom,

What year MFG is this engine?

On your bypass setup remember the center small wire needs to get energised at the start to initiate the starting circuitry.

I would like to rule something out even though it's not high on my suspect list. This is a little reach, but you have already checked several other items. Do me a favor and place a bag of ice on top and around the ignition modules and try a start. Just use a ziplock gallon bag and kind of set it on top and around the edges of the ignition modules. Let it sit for 30 min. then try a start. Let us know the result. It will either fire right up or do the same thing, but at least another item can be checked off the list.

Use your regular solenoid for this check. Don't bypass it.

Hey Roger, Really appreciate your help. After my last post, I removed the cowl, and spin the starter with the master off by using my jumper, and going directly to the starter. It spun perfectly. Next, with a long wooden dowel touching the start relay, and the assistance of my wife, with the master on, and the ignitions off, she engaged the starter via the normal key start. A profound chatter was being emitted from the start relay, and I again got the stall (stopped prop) and profound buzz. This only happened a couple of times. Then, both the buzz, and the stall was gone, and I had a normal spin of the engine. I'm sure that the condition will return by morning. At this point, the start relay is surely the prime suspect. As a diagnosis test, I feel a need to replace it. I was shocked to see that an OEM part is nearly $200.00. I see that Aircraft Spruce offers an after market replacement for the solenoid at under $30.00, which I am considering. Your thoughts??

I will be glad to perform the ice bag test, if you still feel the need. By the way, the engine was purchased from Van's in Dec 2009, and it is serial # 6-775-236. Also, I was glad to get the stall with the ignition off, so as to eliminate any pre-ignition conditions.

I still think the solenoid has a part in this.
The ice bag trick was a second thought since you originally thought the solenoid was okay.
I would try to solenoid first. If someone around you has a 912 ask if you can borrow it for a quick test. Then you'll know for sure real quick.

I hope you found your problem. I know it has been a royal PITA for you. Good luck.

I certainly agree with you that the starter solenoid appears to be the culprit, and it will be my next repair effort. Yes, this has been a bit un-nerving, but now that the cause is shifting farther away from the sprag clutch, it is like a ton of stress has been lifted off of me. I'll be posting more as I move forward with the solution. Thanks again.............Tom
