    Hi Steve

    The soft start is not necessary for a 912 without the slipper clutch, it was designed for the 912s with the slipper clutch fitted.

    Ask Conrad, after all, he did design it.

    Hi Mark,

    True and all 912ULS engines that came into the US from 2003 on has them. This is how they were imported through Kodiak.

    I certainly prefer the start up without the soft start even with the new fly wheel fitted on the new engine which I understand is different from the original and has modified the timing slightly.

    I think you pointed that out to me on an earlier post.

    In an earlier post I think it was mentioned that carb balance was even more critical with soft start than normally. I recall this was so when I was last at an IRMT class where we balanced carbs. When we were done it sounded like just lower power, followed smoothly by full power, as one would expect from 30-odd degrees of retard from the usual setting. But before we got there initial was rougher. Definitely worthwhile however to keep stress on the clutches to a minimum.
