Hi all,

Does anyone know what type of EGT probe are being used in the iS motors from Rotax? Has anyone used an alternative probe? I have some iffy probes and need to replace one and would like to keep one spare, Getting hold of them locally is a challenge (and ridiculously pricey).

Thanks!

    K type thermocouple.....

The ongoing saga I have has with EGT probes for at least 35 years is that it is hard to find one that survives well in the high vibration and temp cycle environment of an exhaust header.

Twice I found a good supplier only to have them close down years later.

You do tend to get what you pay for good ones are expensive. Cross fingers I have so far found the Rotax OEM ones to be good (800 hr and counting). Have them well stress relieved, any stress on the probe or wires will result in short life.Do not tighten up the gland too tight..

If you find some good ones buy a couple of spares !

I have used Rotax part no. 886 261.  I had 3 out of the 4 originally fitted fail. within a few hundred hours.

How much did you pay for each sensor?   I bought one from Leading Edge Airfoils for about $195.00

I also paid 195.00 each for these (at a different vendor) and I too have lost 3 of 4 probes within 300 hours.  Plus, one of the replacements failed within 50 hours. I now keep one at the hanger. It seems like on my aircraft they fail when the engine is being started.

On an iS what do the EGT probes tell one about system problems other than something is wrong with the fuel air mixture in a cylinder or two, or the ECU? And in flight what can a pilot do other than land and visually inspect and hopefully find someone who knows the engine and can diagnose the electronics? Anyone have a probe forewarn of an impending engine failure?
