    In my experience, loose electrical connections seem to account for the large majority of erratic EGT indications. As Roger noted, new EGT probes from Dynon are relatively inexpensive. However, before you buy/install a new EGT probe, clean, wiggle and reset all of the electrical connections on your current EGT probe circuit -- you may solve your erratic indication issue without the need for a new probe. I have had two Dynon EGT probes that were initially erratic but now continue to work fine after I fiddled with the portion of the EGT wire where it exits the probe sheath -- likely a loose connection at that point.

    I agree with Dave. Always check connections first. Another thing to check is turn on the power so you get an EGT reading display and wiggle the wire at the end of that probe to see if the temp on the display also moves around.

    I had exactly the same problem. I checked and cleaned all electrical connections-no change. Then I purchased and installed a new Dynon probe and the problem was solved. However, my new probe consistently reads about 70F higher than the other old (700 hours) probe. I have been told that when probes are old, I should replace all of them at the same time, even if some are still working. I plan to do this; why not-they are cheap and easy to install.

    A matched set of EGT probes provide very helpful information during the carburetor synchronization process.
