Hello:

Is true that I have to do a gearbox overhaul every 1000 hours of my rotax 912 uls?

Thanks in advance

    Hi Edgar,

Depending on your gearbox it may be 600 hrs or 1000 hrs.
It is only an inspection and not an overhaul. Yes you may need one or all of the following; shimming, Bellville washers, a shaft bearing/oil seal and if you use 100LL and have a slipper clutch it may need to be sent in for dis-assembly and cleaning from all the lead build up that will render it for the most part useless if left unattended too long.

    Hi,

If I am reading the list correctly then I do not need to have the gearbox inspected at all before TBO on my 912 UL with overload clutch. Please correct me if I am wrong.

    Hi Harri,

Yes you do at 600 hrs. with a UL and no slipper clutch in the gearbox (most owners). Did you install a slipper clutch in the gearbox or exactly which model UL do you have?
It is also 600 hrs if you have a 912ULS and use 100LL more than 30% of the time. Lead is bad no matter what aircraft engine it is running in. It isn't really low lead and it gums up and sticks to everything and more so in an air cooled engine. The lead in 100LL mixed with a little moisture in a humid climate will also cause an acid and that will eat and pit internal engine parts.
There is an area that isn't addressed well in the maintenance manual and that is a UL that has had a gearbox slipper clutch installed. I will double check and get back to you on that one.

    Hi Roger,

Thanks for your answer. Mine is a 2005 912 UL (s/n 4406258) with slipper clutch. The slipper clutch was ordered from Rotax together with the engine as an optional extra so it has been in the gearbox from new. To me it looks like the type of engine I have does not need a gearbox inspection at either 600 or 1000h. Of course SB-912-033-UL requires that the inspection is done at 600h if the engine has been run over 30% of the time with avgas.

    Regards,
    Harri

    Hi Harri,

Everyone has to do the gearbox inspection before they reach TBO. A UL with no slipper is 600 hrs, but my inclination is yours may now be 1000 with the slipper clutch. I'll let you know when I get a definitive answer from my email.
