I am a retired mechanic and have been involved with 2 cycle engines all my live. Because I have a choice I fly behind a Rotax 582. It is a high quality, efficient powerplant but it has to be set up and looked after properly. The 582 in my current plane has over 600 hours clocked on it and has been totaly fault free during this time. It is a dependable easy starting engine summer or winter. A lot of my hours have been logged in the winter at -20C and colder. I have usually completed my run-up and am taxing out before the other guys have finished fighting with their pre-heaters. It out performs a similar plane, set up with a Suburu, that regularly flies with us. I carry 80 liters of fuel that gives me 5 hours of cruise with a nice reserve, this is done at 75% power setting. That works out to just a squeak over 3 gallons (4.54L/gal) an hour.
If your 582 is not performing correctly, do not condemn the engine. If you are not comfortable resolving the issues, gain the knowledge or engage the services of somone that does. For goodness sake read all of the Rotax literature.

All sounds like good advice Roger...I will download the manual and read as time permits. Please don't think I am canning Rotax...no fear mate, the 503 I had run flawlessly for 5 years, and even carried me out of tiger country once on only 1 cylinder. Its just this 582 I have issues with. Maybe when I cool down a bit and get some reading done on this engine, I may change my mind.

"Dump all the fuel and start fresh"

Yes, I did that the moment I realized my mistake. Have now done 2 hours on clean fuel.

I have also changed the plugs over as Bill suggested in last post and hopefully will be testing it out tomorrow.

"The one last thing we don't really know about is how the last owner really maintained it"
Great point Roger. This motor has only done 25 hours spanned over 5 years, which is not enough exercise in my book. Can't imagine there would have been any maintenance at all probably.

"For goodness sake read all of the Rotax literature."

Point taken Dennis. Your right, I don't have enough experience to condemn this engine, all I can do is condemn the performance (I am getting) and hopefully find a good reason for it. That's why I'm here.

Sorry for bringing my frustrations to the forum. In future I will try harder to tone it down and focus more on fixing the problems. In hindsight I realize that promoting other engines on this Rotax forum was rather rude, and can certainly understand how it could offend some. My frustrations got the better of me. My apologies.

    Regards...Mike

Having a seemingly unreliable engine is very frustrating Michael, so you can be forgiven for that, especially when you don't know much about it. When you go flying there are 3 things that make up the team; there's the pilot, there's the aircraft and there's the engine. The captain of the team must know everything there is to know about his team mates. Every nut, every bolt, every sound; you rely on each other to keep each other safe and in one piece. Don't be concerned about someone else's team mates, they're not your team mates. Learn and look after what you've got and you will be a happy chappy

The plugs aren't on the bottom, who ever designed your plane turned it upside down and there can be consequences to that depending on the setup.

So what might be a good reason to turn the engine upside down Rog? All I can think of is for a lower prop position maybe.

And what might be an example of a consequence?

Sorry to ask so many questions...trying to learn. :)
